Fiberglass Pools in South Florida: The High-Water-Table Problem
Search for fiberglass pools and you’ll find national manufacturers making a genuinely fair case: factory-controlled quality, smooth gelcoat, fast installation, gentle on chemicals. All true. What the brochures don’t cover is the ground the shell goes into — and in Palm Beach County, the ground is the whole conversation.
The physics problem under this county
South Florida sits on sand over porous limestone with a water table that, in much of West Palm Beach, is only a few feet down. Limestone is honeycombed with voids and channels; groundwater moves through it freely and refills excavations almost as fast as pumps empty them. Now put a fiberglass shell in that ground. A fiberglass pool is, structurally, a boat — a light, rigid, waterproof hull. Full of water, it’s stable. Empty, or even partially drained, it’s the most buoyant object on your property, held down mostly by the water inside it and the deck around its lip. When groundwater rises — a wet season, a king tide near the Intracoastal, an irrigation main break — an empty fiberglass shell can lift, tilt or “pop” clear of the ground. Concrete shells face the same physics, but a properly engineered gunite shell is designed against uplift for the specific lot, with mass and reinforcement doing the holding.
Where fiberglass genuinely wins
Fairness matters, so: on high, dry, well-drained lots further inland, fiberglass is a legitimate choice. Installation is fast when crane access exists. The gelcoat surface is smooth, comfortable and slow to grow algae. The shapes available have improved enormously. If your yard is in Wellington on high ground and a stock shape fits your vision, a well-installed fiberglass pool will serve you fine.

The access line deserves a West Palm Beach footnote: the neighbourhoods people most want pools in — El Cid, Flamingo Park, Prospect Park — are exactly the ones with mature banyans, narrow side yards and historic-district trees nobody is craning a 30-foot shell over. Gunite arrives through a hose.
Our position, plainly
We build gunite exclusively, and this is why: in this county’s ground, we want the shell engineered for the lot, not floated into it. When someone’s situation genuinely favours fiberglass — high ground, open access, stock shape, speed above all — we say so at the design visit and wish them well. What we won’t do is put a hull in a high water table and hope the wet season is kind.
